Thieves Featured in September/October 2008 Issue of Mothering Magazine In the September/October edition of Mothering magazine, Candace Walsh featured the Thieves® blend of essential oils in her 'Strokes of Genius' article highlighting helpful products to try during pregnancy. Imus named Young Living's Thieves® Waterless Hand Purifier as one of her recommended "greening" products, and The View co-hosts Whoopi Goldberg and Elizabeth Hasselbeck sampled the product on air. Imus explained that among other products many parents often use, most hand sanitizers are not healthy because of their alcohol content. Young Living's Thieves hand purifier, however, contains only natural ingredients, and is therefore a better alternative. Imus also created a list of recommended reading that she included in her book and listed Gary Young's Essential Oils Desk Reference as her favorite book on essential oils. It's no surprise that stress is a major problem in the U.S. and now, as if we actually need it, we have official proof, as a survey was actually conducted which came to this obvious conclusion. See below. While there are many ways to deal with stress, anxiety and other similar conditions that arise for everyone from time to time and for some more than others, the therapeutic properties of essential oils provide a little known, non- toxic and very effective way to calm the nervous system and de-stress. Many find that starting their day with this application makes all the difference. * * * A Third Of Americans Extremely Stressed, New Survey By Catharine Paddock Article URL: http://www.medicalnewstoday.com/articles/86705.php 25 Oct 2007 A new national survey by the American Psychological Association (APA) suggests that one third of Americans are living with extreme stress while nearly half believe stress is damaging their health, their relationships, and work productivity, and that it has got worse in the last 5 years. Three quarters of Americans (compared with 60 per cent last year) said money and work caused them the most stress, with half mentioning housing costs such as rent and mortgage as a big factor, a result that the APA suggests is linked to the US housing crisis. Stress had a negative effect on personal and working life, was the view of nearly 50 per cent of Americans, and about one third said it was difficult to manage the responsibilities of work and family. One quarter of Americans said that stress alienated them from a friend or family member and 8 per cent linked it to divorce or separation. Executive director for professional practice at the APA, psychologist Dr Russ Newman said that: "Stress in America continues to escalate and is affecting every aspect of people's lives - from work to personal relationships to sleep patterns and eating habits, as well as their health." "We know that stress is a fact of life and some stress can have a positive impact, however, the high stress levels that many Americans report experiencing can have long-term health consequences, ranging from fatigue to obesity and heart disease," he added. The Stress in America online survey is part of the APA's Mind/Body Health Public Education Campaign. The survey involved 1,848 adults and was carried out in September 2007 on behalf of the APA by Harris Interactive. The results were adjusted for age, sex, race and ethnicity, education, region, and household income to make them representative of the overall American adult population. The key results showed that:
• 28 per cent of Americans said they were managing stress extremely well. • However, over 70 per cent reported recently having physical and psychological symptoms of stress. • Physical symptoms included: fatigue (51 per cent), headache (44 per cent), upset stomach (34 per cent), muscle tension (30 per cent) and others. • Psychological symptoms included: feeling angry or irritable (50 per cent), feeling nervous (45 per cent), lacking energy (45 per cent), feeling tearful (35 per cent). • Nearly half of Americans said stress caused them to lay awake at night. • 43 per cent of Americans said they were overeating or eating unhealthily as a way to manage stress. • 36 per cent said they had skipped a meal in the last month because of stress. • Drinkers (39 per cent) and smokers (19 per cent) said they drank or smoked more when highly stressed. • 43 per cent said they watched TV more than 2 hours a day and 39 per cent said they played video games or surfed the Net. • A good proportion also mentioned healthy ways to manage stress, including: listening to music (54 per cent), reading (52 per cent), exercising or walking (50 per cent), being with family and friends (40 per cent), and praying (34 per cent). The survey also asked participants about their motivation to change lifestyle or behavior to reduce stress or manage it more effectively. 35 per cent said they would make changes if diagnosed with a chronic condition. The main motivator for change, mentioned by 60 per cent of the respondents, would be to feel better. 38 per cent said they would be motivated to make changes if they received encouragement from a spouse or partner. DEPRESSION PROTOCOL: Many years ago, Dr. Young taught a protocol for depression which I have found not only to be very uplifting and soothing, but many people with whom I've shared this protocol have written back to tell me that it's helped their family members with bi-polar, manic depression, panic attacks, and other brain-chemistry situations, as well.
Another thought - at the First Congress of Integrated Medical Aromatherapy in Grasse , France , there was a doctor there (I think from Germany or Belgium ) who told a story of a client who was so hyperactive that he was quite unmanageable. He took this young man for a walk to talk to him because sitting in an office was not working. Soon he noticed that the boy was calm. Since they were walking among pine trees, the doctor surmised that pine oil might be a good treatment. It worked beautifully. From this story, we learn two things - that pine oil, rich in sesquiterpenes which have access to the brain, may be helpful. We also learn that through careful observation, something that would normally be obscure may become apparent. Test cautiously - but keep testing until you find the best oils. Then use them as often as appears helpful. One friend of mine diffused Joy in her daughter's room, 24 hours a day, 7 days a week, once she realized that this oil brought her daughter from bi-polar, psychotic to the point where she acted normal. Eventually, her daughter went on to lead a normal and very productive life. This friend is Kathy Farmer, one of the leaders in Young Living. Obviously, all kids may not respond so favorably, but it's worth a try..... I have had severe anxiety disorder with agoraphobia since I was 21 (now 50). Since using frankincense and rose oil it is gone. I may have a twinge now and then in public places, but it is very controllable now. I had cold hands, face and feet, tingling throughout the arms, difficulty breathing and a horrible sense of impending doom. My heart rate would send me to ERs, convinced I was having a heart attack. I used Buspar years ago and I stopped using Paxil about 3 months after finding YLEO (1997). I stopped it with the guidance of my physician. I never recommend someone do this on their own. There can be serious side effects, even potentially, seizures, and you may need to be tapered off. I used frankincense whenever I felt like it. I would sometimes just open the lid and smell it for a few moments. I wore rose oil (joy was not enough) several times a day. I know this sounds expensive, but it is your health. You can open the rose bottle and rub your wrist around the rim and get any evaporation that may be occurring to save drops. By the way, I now use rose oil very seldom, although I will never stop my use of frankincense because I love it so much. I wore frankincense on my carotid arteries in the neck and under my nose. I now wear Brain Power when I drive in heavy traffic under my nose to keep the panic away. It relaxes my neck and shoulders as well, believe it or not!!! I use lavender on my pillow at night to sleep along with Peace and Calming on my feet and wrists. If I wake up in the middle of the night, I put more Peace and Calming on my feet. I keep it separate on my nightstand, so I can grab it in the dark and know it is the only oil there, then I don't awaken my significant other!! I wear vetiver on my chest 20 minutes before sleep. It is rather pungent, so I have chosen not to wear it during the day unless I am alone. I also went to therapy and worked for a long time on my childhood issues that created the panic to begin with. I worked with a spiritual therapist to examine all my belief systems. Trust, fears, etc. Who I took them from and how to give them back to the person I took them from. I got to change all of them and connect to myself for the first time ever. I hope some of this helps. I truly understand how crippling anxiety/panic disorder can be. There were times I could not get to the bank to make a deposit because I was so afraid and I would bounce checks and be so upset along with many other incidences. I no longer NEED the oils to control the disorder, it has dissipated so much. Strength and hope with you. Nanci Fitzgerald * * * I used to have those "oh no " anxiety attacks sometimes daily and weekly after my accident and even before at times, but lavender and peppermint have all but erased them. I have also changed my diet and lost 41 lbs. in a year. I am 40 and weigh now what I did when I graduated High School. I eat my proteins in the A.M., starches and carbs at lunch and fruit at night. I sleep so much better at night. It's so nice to wake in the morning feeling refreshed and not groggy. Eating meat at night makes me restless at night and I wake feeling tired and can't get going. Fruit at night works like a champ every time. When I am stressed about something at work, I put a drop of Lavender on my sternum and on my brain stem before going to bed and I sleep deeply and feel very rested in the morning. Try it, it works. When I have run out of lavender, orange works wonders on tummies and can't sleep children who wake me (their father) up at 1 AM to say they can't get to sleep. My husband has had anxiety attacks for 15 years. 3 weeks ago I talked him into using Juvaflex and he told me after a week of using it that he hadn't had any attacks since he started on it. He still hasn't. He didn't believe in the oils before he did that. Joanne Granum
