* * * * * * * * * * * * * * 1) Essential Oils 101 - Part 1 DO YOU REMEMBER YOUR CHEMISTRY? Yikes. Let's get this out of the way fast, and start with the very smallest part of an essential oil. The molecule - the smallest portion of a substance that retains all the properties of the substance as composed of one or more atoms - Webster's Dictionary.
Different molecules determine the characteristics and fragrance of the essential oil. Compounds are a collection of atoms with different moleculair weight. This is how we get to combinations like CO2 (carbon dioxide), H2O (water) and C6H12O6 (glucose).
An essential oil is a volatile liquid and aromatic compound distilled or pressed from plants. The liquid may come from oil glands, hairs, ducts, bark, stems, leaves and flowers of the plant and is really not oily feeling at all. Because of the distillation process you have a liquid that is many more times concentrated and much more potent than fresh herbs. A little goes a very long way. Don't be thrown off by the word OIL. In contrast to fatty oils which are obtained from pressing nuts or seeds,
IT IS CALLED ESSENTIAL BECAUSE WITHOUT IT THE PLANT WOULD DIE. There are some great similarities between the action of the oil of a plant and human blood in our body. This may be why essential oils assimilate so well with our system.
STAY WITH ME FOR JUST A TINY BIT MORE CHEMISTRY Essential oils contain hundreds of different constituents, some of which have to this day not been identified by chemists. All these constituents act together in harmony, supporting each other to make an oil truly therapeutic. Certain constituents can be harmful when you isolate them, for instance in the lab or creating the ingredient synthetically. In the case of essential oils, constituents harmful in isolation may actually be very beneficial together with other constituents This is what makes an essential oil unique, pure and therapeutic. They cannot be duplicated in the lab without loosing therapeutic value. Start messing with the constituents in an oil, by adding synthetic chemicals, overheating during the distillation process, or dilution, and you can say goodbye to therapeutic, gentle, alive!, oils that work! SO HOW COME THEY SMELL SO GOOD? Fragrance is present in gases, not in liquids. Because essential oils are volatile (evaporate) there is fragrance.
Think of a bulb with tiny hairlike nerve extensions. These odor receptors are stimulated by fragrance molecules flashing into the air. The molecules and receptors fit together like a key in a hole. This opens "the door" to your brain and creates some serious magic. Messages are sent to the Limbic system of your brain which contains such glands as the Amygdala - center of emotions, the Pituitary - one of our endocrine glands, the Hypothalamus - director of our hormone system, and the Pineal gland - which produces melatonin. You can see we have put a connection between essential oils and how they affect you just by their fragrance. Simply smelling them, breathing them from the bottle or diffusing them in your home can change your brain chemistry. We are talking AROMA-THERAPY now! Did you ever visit our lemon page? Citrus oils are expressed from the rind of the fruit, which makes it so important you have a true, organic oil in your bottle. The rind is exactly where all pesticides collect. Citrus oils are photo-sensitizing! Meaning you should not wear them if you are going out in the sun, they will turn the skin brown. By the way, perfumes are highly photo-sensitizing also. If you have ever wondered why you have darker skin on the sides of your neck, consider your perfume spray the big culprit! Do you have a lemon testimonial: ****************************** 3) Four Day Essential Oil Convention for only $50 Once a year Young Living holds a four day company convention.
