1) So How Do I Use My Essential Oils?
- Essential Oils 101 part 4

If you need a refresher see the other classes here:
Part 1 - Some basic science on essential oils. What ARE they?
Part 2 - History of essential oils and aromatherapy.
Part 3 - Essential oil quality. What's in YOUR bottle?

You've bought your therapeutic essential oils kit and now what? Most people feel a little overwhelmed when they see these bottles sitting in front of them and need to figure out which oil is for what, and where do I put it!?!

There are indeed a hundred ways to use you oils.

Let's start with some safety guidelines:

  1. Essential oils are highly concentrated so only use a few drops at a time. Your bottle will go a very long way.If at any time you are unsure about the strength of an oil dilute it first 50:50 with a pure vegetable oil like almond, jojoba or even a light olive oil.
  2. Essential oils do not mix with water, in fact water intensifies their action. So if you get some in your eye or ear, DO NOT RINSE WITH WATER. Instead always have a bottle of vegetable oil at hand which you can apply over the essential oil to dilute it. If you got a lot in your eye, use a drop of vegetable oil to soften the sting.
  3. Only oils listed as G.R.A.S.(generally regarded as safe for consumption, by the FDA) can be used as supplements. They should be diluted with vegetable oil, rice milk or agave syrup before you put them in a capsule or your drink.
  4. Do a test patch firstif you are prone to allergies: on the inside of your thigh or upper arm. See how your skin reacts before doing larger applications.
  5. Citrus oils react with the sun. Oils like orange, lemon, bergamot, tangerine and grapefruit should not be used on skin exposed to the sun. There is a possibility your skin will temporarily turn brown. Photosensitizing.
  6. Essential oils can dissolve soft plastics and styrofoam so always use in glassware and store in dark glass bottles.
  7. Do not use essential oils when pregnant, have epilepsy or high blood pressure, without doctor supervision
  8. Keep essential oils out of reach of small children and only let them use oils under your supervision

Ready To Apply?
Here Are The Basic Application Methods:

  • TOPICAL APPLICATION

amber bottleNEAT or undiluted. Apply 1 - 3 drop to the affected area. If at anytime you are unsure about an oil apply a few drops to your feet first. Your skin there is relatively thick and yet oils absorb well here because of large sweat glands.

DILUTED 50:50. 1 drop of essential oil to 1 drop of vegetable oil. Great for larger areas of skin.

DILUTED 20:80. 1 drop of essential oil to 4 drops of vegetable oil. Especially use this for small children and small pets. If working with infants dilute even further like 1:100

COMPRESS Apply 1-3 drops of up to 3 different single oils to the affected area. Take a hand towel, fold it lengthwise in threes and wet it with hot water. Squeeze out, and wrap the towel around the affected area (let's say for knee pain around the knee or for tendinitis around the elbow) Now cover the damp towel with a dry hand towel and let the whole thing rest until totally cooled down. The wet towel will intensify the action of the oils. If at any time you experience discomfort massage a few drops of vegetable oil over the area and reapply the towels. This is sports injury therapy at its best!

BATHING Mix 10 to 15 drops of essential oils into a mixture of Epsom salts and baking soda (1/2 cup each). Sprinkle about a 1/4 cup into the bathtub and soak. Always use your oils in the bathtub this way to disperse properly.

BODY MASSAGE To a 2 ounce bottle of almond or jojoba oil add up to 30 drops of 1-3 essential oils. Great for the whole body.

RAINDROP TECHNIQUE This awesome treatment needs a second person to apply the drops of nine different oils to your back. For a list of massage therapists in your are click here.

  • INHALATION

    ultrasonic diffuser
DIRECT - SNIFF AND INHALE Apply 1-2 drops to the palm of your hands, rub in and cup your hands over your nose and mouth. Inhale gently and deeply several times.

DIFFUSING Using a cold air diffuser or your ultrasonic diffuser, fill it with your oil of choice (use up to three single oils together, but never mix a blend with a blend). Most rooms need about ten minutes of diffusing to saturate the air. You can also sit close to the diffuser if you are working on lung problems or nursing a cold. One of the easiest ways to introduce essential oils to your family members.

SPRAYS You can create your own misters by dropping 10-30 drops of essential oil in a spray bottle filled with distilled water. Use for disinfecting countertops and bathroom surfaces, as an air freshener or body spritz.

VAPOR Add a few drops of essential oil to a bowl of hot water. Drape a towel over your head and the bowl, and inhale the vapors as they rise from the steam.

COTTON BALLS Add a few drops of essential oil to a cotton ball and place on your vaporizer, humidifier vent, in air vents at hotels or window air conditioning units.

  • INGESTION

You should only do this with GRAS essential oils (generally regarded as safe for ingestion by the FDA).

CAPSULES Buy '0' or'00' size gelatin capsules at the health food store or from Young Living. Fill the largest half of the capsule halfway with essential oils. A glass medicine dropper is very helpful for this. Fill the remainder of the capsule half with vegetable oil and close with the other half. Take as directed.

This is a great way to get oils into the body. There may be a little 'burping' up of oils. Try the preformulated gelcaps from Young Living. They are specially coated to have a slow release rate in the body and you will not burp up oils this way.

    ingesting essential oils
RICE MILKRice milk in non-mucus forming and a great medium for ingesting essential oils. Use 3-5 drops of essential oil in 1/2 cup of rice milk.

BLUE AGAVE SYRUP Add 1-3 drops of essential oil to 1 tsp. Blue Agave sweetener. Hold this in the mouth for 30 seconds before swallowing. Or add to your favorite herbal tea.

TONGUE Take 1 drop of essential oil and apply it to the back of the tongue. Let it mix with saliva, move your tongue around the gums for extra absorption and then swallow. Great with peppermint or spearmint oil to freshen breath, with Thieves® and melaleuca to kill sore throat germs.

  • RETENTION

If you need to do some intense essential oil therapy, especially when dealing with cancer the following methods need to be taken into consideration.

RECTAL RETENTION One of the most effective ways to deliver essential oil compounds to the urinary tract and reproductive organs. Dilute recommended essential oils 40:60 and insert 1-2 tablespoons in rectum with a bulb syringe. Retain overnight. Or fill '00' size gelatin capsules and insert for retention overnight.

VAGINAL RETENTION Apply 1-2 tablespoons of the recommended essential oils, diluted 40:60 to a natural/organic cotton tampon and insert for overnight retention. Helpful for internal infections or cervical/uterine cancer. Can also be done with '00' gelatin capsules.

For A Few More Cool Household Uses

  • Painting Add 1 tsp. of an essential oil to 1 gallon of paint and mix well, to get rid of the smell of paint fast.
  • Dishwasher Add a few drops of your favorite oil to the dishwasher gel to improve smell and cleansing power
  • Laundry Add 25 drops of Eucalyptus to your bedding load, to kill dust mites. Lemon is a fantastic stain remover, drop directly on stains before adding to laundry, and add Lavender or other essential oils to a damp washcloth in the dryer cycle instead of dryer sheets.
  • cooking with essential oils
  • Learn to cook with essential oils. Great for substituting fresh herbs like basil, oregano and thyme.
