The "Essentials" on Essential Oil

Learn More About:

An essential oil is the life-blood of a plant. Just like blood running through our veins and arteries, aromatic essences run through the veins of plants and all it's living parts. Without these, a plant would simply die, hence the term "essential".

In its crude form you'll find essential oils in the sap of a tree branch after you've placed a cut on it. Or squeeze the rind of an orange and it's oil will squirt in your eyes. Cut a ginger root in half and you'll see little beads of oil form on it's surface.

You should know that essential oils:

  • are not oily at all! They don't feel greasy and will never go rancid, like the fatty oils of olive, almond or jojoba do. However, just like fatty oils they don't mix well with water.
  • are volatile oils, which means they evaporate and thicken over time. High quality essential oils have a very long shelf life if you keep them properly stored in tight containers and preferably in a cool, dark place.
  • release aromatic molecules which work on our sense of smell which in turn stimulates many positive responses in the body, like a sense of calming but also hormonal balancing. This particular use of oils created the term aromatherapy.
  • are made up of hundreds of chemical compounds some of which have not even been identified by scientists. Because of their complexity and compatibility with our bodies they all have many different healing uses and applications.

  • have been used as natural remedies since 4000 BC. King Tutankhamen's tomb revealed sealed terracotta jars which still contained precious oils inside. Many writings on the walls of Egyptian tombs and chambers show how essential oils were used in temples for rituals and embalming practices.

The Frankincense trail around Ubar

In historic times the extraction of oils was crude, often performed by pressing plant material in oils and later extracting them through the use of mesh cloth and heat. But at least there were no chemicals used to adulterate or extend oils.

Adulteration is one of the biggest problems we deal with today in the aromatherapy industry. Get to know your oil supplier!

Recent discoveries include the "Frankincense Trail". Amazing satellite images in the desert of Yemen reveal ancient camel routes, used for transporting Frankincense resin.

The camel trails merge at the Lost City of Ubar.(spidery lines near center of picture)

Remember the precious gifts of Gold, Frankincense and Myrrh to the Christ child. Well, in Biblical Times these spices were truly worth their weight in gold.

There are huge differences in quality of essential oils and all my suggestions on this site refer to therapeutic grade oils.
