The "Essentials" on Essential Oil

Essential Oil: Eucalyptus Frankincense Geranium Lavender Lemon Lemongrass Marjoram Melaleuca (Tea Tree) Orange Peppermint Sandalwood

An essential oil is the life-blood of a plant. Just like blood running through our veins and arteries, special aromatic essences run through the veins of plants and all it's living parts.

Place a small cut on the branch of a tree and some sap will flow out, squeeze the rind of an orange and it's oil will jump in your eyes. Cut a ginger root in half and you'll see little beads of oil form on it's surface.

Now let me tell you immediately that these plant oils are not oily at all! They don't feel greasy and you don't rub them on your hands in the winter time like fatty oils of almond or jojoba.

They are volatile oils, which means that if you leave them sitting open they will evaporate and thicken up on you. Because of evaporation they are also very aromatic and this particular use of oils coined the term aromatherapy.

Essential oils have been used as natural remedies since Egyptian times. King Tutankhamen's tomb revealed sealed terracotta jars which still contained precious oils inside.

Many writings on the walls of Egyptian tombs and chambers show how essential oils were used in temples and for rituals andembalming practices.

In historic times the extraction of oils was a little crude but the oils were no less effective and could not have been adulterated with chemicals as so many oils are now.

Recent discoveries include the "Frankincense Trail". Amazing satellite images in the desert of Yemen reveal ancient camel routes,used for transporting Frankincense resin.

Remember the precious gifts of Gold, Frankincense and Myrrh to the Christ child. Well, in Biblical Times these spices were truly worth their weight in gold.
