New and Improved First Aid Kit

We have an improved first aid kit with several essential oils in the car, the garage, the kitchen, on our boat, and inside the "ditch bag". This last bag we keep on hand for the ultimate emergency, when there is no other choice but to jump in a life raft. Hopefully never happens but when it does, I will have my oils with me.

I can't imagine having to deal with wounds, cuts, scrapes, bruises, fainting, broken bones, heart attacks, sunburns, insect bites and anxiety without the proper remedies at hand.

This is where essential oils are invaluable. I give essential oils first prize for size and speed and ease of use.

Improved First Aid Kit

It's a little hard to fit every favorite oil in that small first aid kit. Which ones to choose?

5 ml bottles of essential oil will be very helpful. You could also use small 2 ml bottles, which are easily ordered, and fill them with your favorite oils, since you won't pull out the first aid kit that often.

Here are the must haves:

  • Lavender - Unlimited possibilities, when in doubt, use Lavender. Of course, let it be a pure one. Lavendula augustifolia, organically grown and therapeutic grade. Great as a first aid for bruising, cuts, scrapes and burns.
  • Melaleuca - Tea Tree oil. Highly antiseptic and pretty mild to the skin. A therapeutic grade can be used undiluted on cuts and scrapes. Follow with some ointment to soften a wound and seal in the Melaleuca.
  • Purification - A blend specific to Young Living essential oils, essential for insect bites, poison ivy and oak.
  • Lemon - A major disinfectant, don't use directly on wounds, more around the area. Put in sprays, added to distilled water. Great emergency oil to purify water.

If you can call chewing gum in hair an emergency then Lemon, dropped directly on the gummy mess will dissolve it immediately.

And here are some could adds:

  • Peace & Calming - Another Young Living blend to calm anxieties. Helpful in panicky situations on children and pets.
  • PanAway - Powerful blend to help ease intense pain of broken bones, slamming a finger between the door and twisted joints.
  • Peppermint - Soothes digestive problems, think of cramps or diarrhea. Also great to break a fever in kids. Apply a few drops diluted with some oil or Vaseline to the feet. Or dip a washcloth in water with a few drops added to it and dab over forehead and arms to soothe and cool down the body.

Essential oils, because of their complex composition of healing molecules, have numerous actions.

If you happen to have only two oils in your pocket at the time of an emergency or accident, and you are the person called upon to give first aid, use a few drops of the oils on the feet of the injured person. At a minimum you may help improve circulation and oxygen to the blood and calm anxieties.
