Ingesting Essential Oils

The French model of Aromatherapy recommends ingesting essential oils. Are the Europeans way ahead of us? Apparently this is a regular practice in French hospitals. But we are catching on.Just like with starting an exercise routine or major weight loss program every wise book and aromatherapist will urge you to consult a doctor first. I do hope you know or find the right physician because most of them at this point know less about natural remedies like essential oils than you do! Taking remedies internally is very effective as ingredients absorb into the bloodstream much faster than through skin absorption. You can start incorporating oils in this manner when you need fast results. But remember, we are working with some very concentrated nutrients here that do not mix well with water.
Here are a few safety guidelines to follow:
- use very pure essential oils, preferably those labeled as dietary supplements.
- add several drops of oil to empty supplement capsules along with the same amount of vegetable oil to dilute and blend
- add one or two drops to rice milk and stir before drinking
- add a few drops to a teaspoon of Blue Agave syrup before stirring in a hot brew or swallowing
- add a drop to your toothbrush before applying your natural toothpaste, great for gum-health
What makes a safe natural remedy? The Food and Drug Administration has provided us with a list of foods and food additives that are Generally Recognized As Safe (G.R.A.S.) to take internally as dietary supplements. For the FDA G.R.A.S. list go to :

Keep your essential oil remedies out of reach of children. If a large quantity of oil is ingested contact a Poison Control Center immediately. Blue Agave Nectar is a very safe and easy to swallow diluting agent for your child. Do not give water! Remember, water intensifies essential oils.
